This exciting day hike in Kerlingarfjöll will uncover the best of the Icelandic wilderness. Rhyolite mountains, steaming hot springs, gushing glacial rivers, and more await you on this journey!
Icelandic highlands, where the Kerlingarfjöll mountain range is located, is a unique place, completely remote and uninhabited. Here you will be able to admire a picturesque landscape of 10,000-year-old rhyolite mountains with snowy caps and steam rising from the geothermal springs below. It is a magical place to spend your day out in the wild.
The tour begins with a pick-up from Reykjavik at around 8 a.m. Once everyone's on board, we'll be driving inland, deep into central Icelandic highlands. Finally, we'll reach Kerlingarfjöll, an ancient rhyolite mountain range, and this is where our adventure begins.
We'll make a short stop at the Highland Base, where we'll fill our supplies and prepare for the hike. Highland Base is located eight at the foot of Kerlingarfjöll in the Ásgarður Valley. Later, we'll make our way to Hveradallir, the most well-known geothermal valley in the area, and this is where our hike begins.
Hveradallir, also known as "the Valley of Hot Springs," is one of the biggest geothermal valleys in Iceland. It is full of steaming vents, boiling mud pots, and bubbling hot springs. Not all of these hot springs are suitable for bathing - some of them are so powerful that it is wiser to admire them from a distance. The whole area is surrounded by colorful rhyolite mountains with ice caps, creating a beautiful contrast between the heat and the cold.
After a day full of adventures, we'll return to Reykjavik around 9 p.m. in the evening.
